Book Review: The Daniel Prayer by Anne Graham Lotz

From cover:

Many people today find that their prayers don’t “work.” And like a broken cell phone, DVD player, or TV remote, they throw prayer out as unnecessary “clutter” in their busy lives. Anne Graham Lotz has found that while prayer does work, sometimes the “pray-ers” don’t. So she has turned to the prophet Daniel for help.
The Daniel Prayer is born deep within your soul, erupts through your heart, and pours out on your lips, words created by and infused with the Spirit of God quivering with spiritual electricity. It’s really not an everyday type of prayer. It’s a prayer birthed under pressure. Heartache. Grief. Desperation. It can be triggered by a sudden revelation of hope. An answer to prayer, a promise freshly received, a miracle that lies just over the horizon…
Join Anne in a thrilling discovery of prayer that really works.
This book will help readers pray effectively for their nation, for their families, and for themselves. She will answer such questions as:
  • Does God only hear the prayers of good people?
  • How do I know the God to whom I pray will listen?
  • How do I know God cares about my prayer?
  • How do I know God will answer my prayer?
  • Why should I pray?
  • Does it matter where I am when I pray?
  • Are words in prayer all that matter, or does my attitude affect prayer?
  • What difference does my prayer make?
The book also includes some of her original prayers that demonstrate the principles taught in The Daniel Prayer.

My Review:

The Daniel Prayer by Anne Graham Lotz is full of prayers that would change lives personally, in communities, across the nations and the world. The Daniel Prayer is based on Daniel 9. Anne shows the reader to prepare for prayer, how to plead in prayer, and about how God answers prayer. the last section of the book is helpful for learning prayer patterns about prayers that are centered, compelled, confident, contrite, clear and for warfare.  The Daniel Prayer by Anne Graham Lotz shows the passion that is poured out in Daniel 9 and how we can have that passion today for our world today. The note section in the back stood out to me with a beautiful walk though of all the scriptures used and other notes about the book chapter by chapter. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting deeper and more effective prayer either in group or personal study.

We are God's Obsession

2 Kings 4:1-7 "Now a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord ; and the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves." Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil." Then he said, "Go, borrow vessels at large for yourself from all your neighbors, even empty vessels; do not get a few. And you shall go in and shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour out into all these vessels, and you shall set aside what is full." So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons; they were bringing the vessels to her and she poured. When the vessels were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." And he said to her, "There is not one vessel more." And the oil stopped. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest."

We are vessels of God. Like the vessels in 2kings 4, God searches for vessels that are capable of carrying His glory. There are conditions that the vessels have to meet to qualify. God heals the broken vessels and makes them stronger. God creates each of us vessels like a master potter.

Like Adam, God searched all of creation for a bride for His son but no created thing was worthy or able to carry His glory, so He created man and women in His own image so that we could have the relationship with Him that His Son was desperately desiring.

We say that God is our obsession but really we are Gods obsession. He took His very words and formed them into man to relate with our form so that He could take upon our sins. He came and lived a perfect life so that He would be worthy for us, worthy of taking our sins, dying, concerning Hell and taking back the keys that we were so foolish with and raising up again. That's obsession.

Now the Holy Spirit searches for vessels that He can fill like the widow was going all over hunting vessels for oil. Gods glory isn't fading. His glory is multiplying like the oil in 2kings. God is looking for willing, worthy vessels that have been cleaned so they don't pollute the oil. Jesus is looking for His bride.

She also leads Never Fail Faith Ministries, a community of believers who connect with one another for encouragement and growth. Leighann lives with her family in Tennessee, and you can visit her online at www.LeighannMcCoy.com.

My Review:

Spiritual Warfare for Your Family by Leighann McCoy is one of the most comprehensive books on spiritual warfare that Ive read. The book is divided into six sections: The Battle is Real, Never Loose a Battle Again, What the devil Doesn't Want You to Know, Desperate Times Calls for Desperate Measures, Protecting Your Children, and Common Issues Families Are Facing and What You Can Do About Them. Each subsection has a prayer and or questions making this a great book for group study. This book would be a great book for any parent wanting wisdom on the spiritual aspects of parenting and the issues that families face today. The only thing I that I wish is that the author would have expounded more on the subtopics that she touched on in the back sections of the book. Greater wisdom on these topics is highly sought after by parents today. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn about the strategic plans and methods of the enemy on families and those you love.

Book Review: Radical Prayer by Manny Mill

From the Back Cover:

When you pray “Hallowed be thy name,” big things happen.
Many of us pray with little heart, little faith, and little expectation. This is not how we were taught to pray.
In Radical Prayer, Manny Mill describes the power that filled his life and ministry when he started praying boldly and persistently for God to be glorified in all things, and he teaches us to do the same.
When we pray this way, heaven crashes into earth. We see greater obedience, more love, and powerful salvation. Radical Prayer invites us to see what can happen when we pray as we ought.
Today's troubled times require replacing religious and comfortable Christianity with a faith narrative infused by a prayer life that connects heaven to earth. Such a prayer life will ignite a radical faith.—Dr. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference

About the Author

MANNY MILL is chief executive officer of Koinonia House® National Ministries (KHNM), which works to connect Christian inmates to the local church. Manny is a former inmate himself who was transformed by Jesus, as recounted in Radical Redemption. He is also a husband, father, grandfather and graduate of Wheaton College. HAROLD SMITH is the president and CEO of Christianity Today International. BARBARA MILL is a speaker, writer, and the operations director for Koinonia House.

My Review:

Radical Prayer by Manny Mill is an easy to read book full of wisdom from testimonies and scripture. Manny Mill exhorts his readers to learn what radical prayer life is like when you pray "Hallowed be thy name..." Manny Mill does a great job of pulling the reader into the pages of his book and leaving them encouraged to walk in biblical prayer with proper understanding and acknowledgement of who God is and who we are. Quotes that stood out to me are "A posture of surrender encourages true worship" and "There are no appointments to be made. We have an immediate audience at any time." I recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper relationship with God through worship and prayer.

Book Review: Girls Slimline Bible NLT from Tyndale House Publishers

From the Publisher:

This adorable edition of God’s Word for girls features the easy-to-understand New Living Translation text with a soft-fur, bright-neon LOVE design and silver glittery lining. The BOLD FAITH design on the back cover encourages girls to live out their faith in ways that bring God glory.

This hardcover deluxe edition also features purple page edges, neon orange ribbon marker, special presentation page, 8 pages of full-color maps, and a 53-page dictionary/concordance to help locate passages on various topics.

The New Living Translation text is excellent for young readers because it is so clear and they can understand what they are reading! When they can read and understand God’s Word, God can work in their hearts!

My Review:

The Girls Slimline Bible NLT (New Living Translation) from Tyndale House Publishers is exactly what the title says. Its a slimline Bible which means thin pages but what this slimline Bible has that many slimline Bibles do not is a reference section including 53 page dictionary/concordance and 8 pages of full color maps. The cover is amazing. The cover is hardbound wrapped with fuzzy fabric printed the word "LOVE" and a hard glittery edge. On the back cover there is a cross with the words "Bold Faith." The cover feels more durable than any other hardbound Bible that I own. Although the pages are thin, I would feel comfortable giving an early elementary school age girl this Bible and not needing to worry about the condition of the book. The purple page edging compliments the girl touch. Inside the cover is hotpink page with a cross outline and the scripture "Because of Christ and our faith in Him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God's presence. Ephesians 3:12" Also inside the cover is a page for dedication including name, from, date, note. I really like how this book looks when it is open. The purple page edging against the hot pink inside cover and glittery edge beautifully shouts "GIRL." I would not hesitate to buy this Bible for my daughter or buy it as a gift for a girl of any age who needs a durable Bible.

Comic Book Review: Ghostbusters International by Erik Burnham

Description

My Review

I decided to review Ghostbusters International by Erik Burnham because my older children and I really like the original Ghostbusters. This book unfortunately is nothing like the original. The book begins with a tarot card reading and death. This beginning turned me off to the book and gave me no desire to read further.  As I read the book I noticed that it was stretching the story line of Ghostbusters and is not fun at all like the original. I was hoping to be able to allow my children to read this comic but with tarot cards involved, it is a book we they will stay away from. I would not recommend this comic book to anyone.

Book Review: The Attributes of God Volume 2: Deeper into the Father's Heart

From the back cover
God's Self-Existence, Transcendence, Eternalness, Omnipotence, Immutability, Omniscience, Wisdom, Sovereignty Faithfulness, and Love.
"We must know God again," A.W. Tozer writes urgently in his introduction to this second volume. "Nothing less than this will save us." Originally preached as sermons to the Avenue Road congregation in Toronto, this study of ten more attributes of God restores our knowledge of who God is. A study guide has been added for an in depth look at each attribute.
"A.W. Tozer's books reflect a unique blend of genuine piety and downright common sense. He challenged every sort of spiritual pretension while evidencing a devotion to Christ that was every bit as sincere as compelling."
A.W. Tozer was born in 1897 on a small farm in western Pennsylvania. Following his conversion to Christ when he was seventeen, he answered God's call to ministry. Tozer was pastor of Southside Alliance Church in Chicago for thirty-one years. He is the author of the spiritual classic, The Pursuit of God.

My Review:
The Attributes of God Volume Two: Deeper into the Father's Heart is A.W. Tozer's famous work, The Attributes of God Volume Two, with a valuable study guide that helps the reader get the most out of A.W. Tozer's The Attributes of God Volume Two. The study guide, written by David E. Fessenden, divides The Attributes of God Volume Two into 12 sessions. The 12 sessions include one session per chapter plus the introduction and a review.
Learning the attributes is valuable because it helps the reader to understand more about their Creator. "God gives to human life its only significance," A.W. Tozer writes in his introduction. A.W. Tozer quotes Romans 1:21-28 to explain the importance of spiritual protection and how having a correct understanding of God keeps us safe. When we learn about the attributes of God, we gain faith and want to change to be more like Him.
I recommend The Attributes of God Volume Two: Deeper into the Father's Heart by A.W. Tozer and David E. Fessenden for anyone who wants to learn about God personally or in a group.

Book Review: Brave Girls: Beautiful You: A 90-Day Devotional

Brave Girls: Beautiful You: A 90-Day Devotional is a book from the Brave Girls series from Tommy Nelson. Tommy Nelson's Brave Girls follows five girls, Hope, Gracie, Faith, Glory and Honor. They don't consider themselves brave but they learn that God can use ordinary girls (both in the Bible and now) to accomplish His will for His Kingdom.

Brave Girls: Beautiful You: A 90-Day Devotional talks about a characteristic that is much needed in girls today and how they relate to God's Kingdom. Each days devotion has a scripture verse, a story, things to do or think about and leads in prayer. The chapters include Beauty Basics, Radiant Reflections, Works of Beauty, Beautifully Clothed, Kingdom Fitness, and Creative Beauty.

I was excited to have my daughters go through this devotional. As I looked through the book I was surprised at how much information was in each devotion. Each devotion hits a key point about beauty and really ties it in to God's Kingdom. I like how the header makes each page fun and readable. I would be interested in reading the other books from this series. Although this book is written for teens and preteens, I recommend this book for any girl no matter the age because everyone child and adult would find something that they could relate to. Beauty today is so distorted. I'm happy to see a book series that relates beauty to God, who created us, and His Kingdom.

Book Review: The Truth About Angels by Tony Evans

From the Back Cover
"Why do you need to know about angels?" Because there’s a divine fight happening, and you are the prize!
Angels are one thing in pop culture and another in the Bible. But given their critical role in life and eternity, we need to know the truth.
In his clear, engaging style, Tony Evans sets the record straight. Giving the Bible’s basic teaching on angels and demons, he explains:
  • Their origin, activities, and future
  • How to understand them and their impact on us
  • How to use their gifts and services for God
Everything we see in the physical realm is somehow influenced by something in the spiritual realm. Angels and demons are at the heart of the struggle—and so are you.

About the Author
DR. TONY EVANS is the founder and president of The Urban Alternative, a national ministry dedicated to restoring hope in personal lives, families, churches and communities. Dr. Evans also serves as senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas. He is a bestselling author and his radio program, The Alternative with Dr. Tony Evans, is heard on nearly 1,000 stations around the globe every day. For more information, visit: tonyevans.org.

My Review
I had the opportunity to review The Truth About Angels by Tony Evans. The Truth About Angels by Tony Evans is a short book at only 64 pages. There are 4 chapters "Where Do Angels Come From?", "How Do Angels Serve?", "How Do Angels Work?" and "Accessing the Power of Angels in Spiritual Warfare" There is also a small section about Tony Evans' ministry, The Urban Alternative. I was pleasantly surprised at how packed full of knowledge and understanding a short book could be. Tony Evans explains the basis for spiritual warfare with a surprising amount of scripture. Tony Evans keeps the reader's attention though the entire book. I could not put the book down and wished it was longer.  I have a much better understanding of spiritual warfare and angels and demons from reading this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for understanding about angels and spiritual warfare.

Book Review: The Play-Along Bible by Bob Hartman and illustrated by Susie Poole

FROM THE BACK COVER:

Using this fresh and easy, multisensory approach, you'll be surprised how well children will recall and absorb the Scriptures.

The Play-Along Bible will
encourage physical activity and social interaction
grow the imagination
enhance children's understanding of the Bible

Bob Hartman is a pastor, author, and storyteller whose books have sold over one million copies. He is best known for the Lion Storyteller Bible, The Wolf Who Cried Boy, The Goat Boy Chronicles series, and YouVersion's popular Bible App for Kids.

Susie Poole is an illustrator of books, cards, and gifts. She is founder of Pupfish, a line of books that capture the wonder of God for children.

REVIEW:
The Play Along Bible by Bob Hartman and illustrated by Susie Poole is a fantastic book for engaging children into the stories of the Bible by acting out the stories. In The Play Along Bible children use facial expressions, vocal phrases and hand motions to create their own dialog to act out the stories. Children learn by playing and as children grow they learn better by doing instead of reading or watching. Teaching to young children is vital to how they grow up. Sometimes the motions seem silly but children love them. The Play Along Bible is an excellent book that teaches children stories that they actually remember. Susie Poole captivates children attention with her illustrations as the story is being read which makes The Play Along Bible a great book to just read even if you don't act the stories out. I highly recommend The Play Along Bible to anyone who is teaching Bible stories to their children or are part of a children's ministry or school.

Book Review: Faith Builders Bible by Zondervan

I was very excited to review Faith Builders Bible by Zondervan. The book has 24 full-color pages of illustrations. Each illustration depicts a brick version of a Bible story like Noah, The Last Supper, The Tabernacle, The Ten Commandments, Zacchaeus and Jesus Walking on Water. I really like the Building with Books of the Bible section which has each Book of the Bible as a brick in biblical order. I was disappointed with the lack of pictures. I think there should be more brick story images. The paper seems thin and the 9point font is too small for the 6-10 year age group that this book was intended for. I also think that the book size could be bigger than 5.5 x 1.1 x 8.5 inches. I do however like the NIrV. If I would look through this book at a book store before buying, I would not buy this book because of there are not enough pictures and the font size is too small. But I would buy Faith Builders Bible by Zondervan if I was looking for a compact NiRV Bible.
